Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Exclusive Trailer
While it does definitely look cool, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is certainly a far cry from the original series, whereas strategy and stealth played a key role in Solid Snake’s adventures, Raiden’s outing seems to be the exact opposite, resembling Devil May Cry more than anything else. Spearheaded by Platinum Games in conjunction with Kojima Productions, only time will tell whether or not Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear magic will rub off on the Platinum Games design team.

I think the MG franchise – like many others that were resurrected or started on psx have been taken too far because of their sheer epicness at the time. The phrase “tearing the ring out of it” comes to mind at the mention of MGS, FF7 (Final Fantasy was never supposed to have sequels as each game was a stand-alone plot and universe yet FF7 gave birth to a plethora of sub-games frome the mobile phone platform to ps2 to psp), RE (Though the main titles in the series are good, the off-shoots like “Outbreak” were fail), Silent Hill (they should’ve stopped at 1. They could’ve gotten away with 2 but instead they brought out a shitload of sequels and off-shoots – including 3 mobile phone games, 2 of which just failed), and a ton of others. But this is not limited to just games. We see it in film and even comics. I’ve always been a believer in “if it stays true to its origins, go crazy” but this is usually not the case. While I have no problem with an “offshoot” of MGS, I think that the Raiden action games, ie “hack ‘n slash”, should not be called MGS or MG but rather something different, especially considering that stealth was the element that won Metal Gear acclaim when it was released on the MSX (and later on NES). Its resurrection on PlayStation left it as one of the top PS games of all times and while MGS2 on PS2/PC was good, it had nothing on MGS. It’s sad to see commercialism so rife in the gaming industry today, but with the birth of more realistic 3D graphics it was likely inevitable. Oh well, as you say, we can but wait and see if the game is a decent one or not…
